The Presbyterian tradition in Scotland was to hold a morning and afternoon service on the Sabbath. Glasite Sunday services were all-day affairs lasting from around 11am to 4pm with a break for a mid-day meal prepared by a resident housekeeper. The meal would begin with kale soup, earning the Glasites their nickname 'the kail kirk'. The boxed pews were occupied by families whose children remained with them throughout the day. One wonders what arrangements, if any, were made for nipping out to answer the call of Nature?
