E J MacRae, 1936. 2 storeys over raised basement, 6-bay symmetrical classical terraced office, matching neighbouring houses. Polished sandstone ashlar frontage, droved at basement and 1st floor, channelled rustication to principal floor with voussoirs over windows, band course above, cornice and blocking course at eaves. Doors to basement at 1st and 6th bays.
12-pane timber sash and case windows, plate glass upper sashes in 4th bay. Plate glass fanlights over basement doors. Grey slate roof, cast-iron downpipes. Mutual rubble stack to W with circular cans.
Coped, coursed rubble wall to street, surmounted with modern wrought- iron railing, original gate with arrowhead finials. Police box at pavement to left of gate.
The erection of this building made possible a belated completion of Smith?s Place and provided offices for the Edinburgh Corporation tramway depot. Despite its comparatively recent construction, it is expertly matched to the neighbouring buildings, its unusual origins only being evident from the lack of an entrance door at the principal floor. A-Group with 1-19 Smith?s Place, 169-177 Leith Walk and 185-193 Leith Walk.
