The Palace block is an interesting survivor of a Royal Residence attached to a Monastery. The lower walls date from a rebuild by Robert the Bruce after destruction by Edward I in 1303. The Palace was extended and rebuilt c1500 and altered again by James V c1540.
The Monastery was dissolved in 1560 but the Palace remained being altered again by James VI at the end of the 16th century. His son, later Charles I was born here in 1600 as was Robert the Bruce's son David II in 1323.
