GATES, GATEPIERS AND RAILINGS, DENS WORKS FOUNDRY 1858:
2 cast-iron Egyptian columns with Greek urn finials depicting
bas-relief figures of learning etc. Simple wrought-iron gates
and railings on low coursed rubble wall.
The School Board acquired Baxter Brothers' Half-Timer's School in 1905 and demolished it in 1916 to make way for an iron
school removed from Glebelands School in Morgan Street.
Replaced in 1992 following a fire. Gates moved to Brown Constable Street.
Baxter's school had been regarded as a model of its kind.
Mary Slessor was a pupil.
Similar Egyptian Columns were at entrance to Upper and Dens Works, but have been scrapped, and the Egyptian theme was also displayed in the form of obelisk chimneys.
Change of Category B to C(S) 1 february,1995.
