Irish immigrants began to arrive in Dundee in 1825, seeking work in the city's textile factories. Over the next 30 years their numbers grew to about 14,000 out of a total population of 60,000 in the 1851 census. In 1848 the Irish-born in Dundee constituted 20 per cent of all burials.
