Bronze statue of Scotland's national bard by the eminent 19thC Scottish sculptor, Sir John Steell, erected in 1880. A companion statue made from the same cast stands in Central Park, New York, the first statue of the poet to be erected outside Scotland. It was unveiled two weeks before its Dundee counterpart. Two further casts were made later for the Thames Embankment Gardens in London (1884) and the New Zealand town of Dunedin, which was practically a Scottish colony in origin (1887).
