Mid 18th century. L-plan house composed of street fronted
block and simple classical block adjoining to N, bordering an
earlier courtyard. Red sandstone rubble with painted margins.
S BLOCK: 3 bays with deep centre door and small flanking
window to left. Iron lamp bracket over door. 4-pane glazing.
E gable harled above, rendered and lined at ground level.
Renewed pantiled roof; harled gable stacks and plain skews.
N BLOCK: possibly later 18th century. Random rubble with
raised, painted and droved stone margins. 3-bay with doors in
1st and 3rd; broad, flush-panelled door with small-pane
upper-lights, to left, with moulded architrave above. 12-pane
glazing pattern; large 1st floor windows. Blind sash window
centre 1st floor with small square window inserted later
below. Slate roof with harled end stack.
OUTBUILDING: single storey, random rubble former stable to E
of 7 and 9 Duke Street by wall and gatepiers. Wide doorway in
W gable. E gable abutting 5 Duke Street. Pantiled roof with
slate eaves easing course.
Garden wall of random rubble, rendered on S side with ashlar
gate piers.
Previously only No 7 listed. House now divided into 3 flats.
N block originally with large 1st floor room, possibly
serving as assembly room for adjoining block.
