18th century. 2-storey house. Later (1970's) rear 2-storey extension, turret and single storey wing. Painted ashlar margins; harled elevations.
N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: corniced, moulded architrave doorpiece; window to left; 2 windows to right. 2 smaller 1st floor windows at eaves.
E ELEVATION: attached to The Haven.
S ELEVATION: central canted bay window with patio doors to centre. 3 1st floor dormer windows breaking eaves. Single storey timber boarded wing to left; replacement fenestration and doors. 2-storey semi-circular tower set back to right. Ground and 1st floor window to S.
W ELEVATION: 1st floor window to left.
Predominantly 6-pane timber sash and case windows with horns. Timber boarded front door. Pitched slate roof to original house. Piended slate rear wing; slated conical roof to turret. Corniced square-plan gable apex stack to W gable.
INTERIOR: modernised interior. Roll-moulded fireplace in E wall, ground floor (probably 1970's insertion). Thick, exposed rubble wall abuts from The Haven and advances into E ground floor room in An Cala. Coved ceilings at 1st floor.
Formerly listed as The Haven. Although later than The Haven, An Cala was incorporated into The Haven. In the 1970's the 2 were divided into separate houses. Originally one room deep, the rear 2-storey dormered section and turret were added in the 1970's. The turret is not currently used as a stairtower (2001). The very thick wall between the 2 houses which is evident on the ground floor, is an interesting feature and may possibly be part of a chimney. The roof pitch of an earlier house, which stood at this spot, is visible on the W gable of The Haven. For brief history of Culross Burgh see Culross, The Cross, The Study.
