John Murdoch, 1879. 2-storey and attic, asymmetrical-plan Baronial school with single storey and attic service wing, later converted to school. Snecked sandstone rubble. Crowstepped gables; terminating scrolls to attic pediments.
SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: steps to entrance within circular-plan tower to right; timber door; letterbox fanlight; stepped labelmould over blank plaque; small single windows flanking; single window at 1st floor; 2 single windows at attic. 2 single windows at ground floor to adjacent crowstepped gabled bay to left; transomed and mullioned leaded window above; single window at attic. Regular fenestration to adjacent bay (penultimate bay to left). Tripartite window at ground floor to bay to left; bipartite window at 1st floor; single attic window. Single window at 1st floor to corbelled angle tower; 2 single windows at attic; finial. Single storey and attic section adjoining to right (obscured by modern building, 1999).
NW (REAR) ELEVATION: 8-bay, grouped 4-3. Regular fenestration of single windows at ground and attic to 4-bay, single storey and attic section to left; attic windows break eaves to form pediments; central bay rises to form crowstepped gable. Regular single window fenestration at ground, 1st and attic floors to 2 bays to left of 3-bay section (attic windows break eaves to form pediments); canted bay rises through ground and 1st floor to bay to right; single window at attic within crowstepped gable.
SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: 2-bay with corbelled angle tower to outer right. Single windows at 1st and attic floors to angle tower. Mullioned central window and single windows to canted sides of advanced ground floor bay to right; 2 single windows at 1st floor; single window at gablehead. Glazed timber door at ground to harled bay to left; single windows at 1st and attic floors.
NE ELEVATION: not seen 1999.
Predominantly plate glass timber sash and case windows. Slate roof; ridge and gablehead stacks; circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: not seen 1999.
GATEPIERS, GATES, RAILINGS AND BOUNDARY WALL: square-plan vehicular gatepiers to left (conical caps) iron gatepiers and gate to right; timber gate to rear; boundary wall enclosing site.
Wellington School, founded at 22 Wellington Square in 1839, as a private school for girls, moved to Carleton Turrets in 1923. No 3 Craigweil Road and the nearby 2 Westfield Road are also designed by the same architect and are of similar design. Later school building work within site.
