In 1816 the Town Council enclosed the Calsay Burn in these walls and built four bridges over old fords. This exspense bankrupted the town, the councillors were imprisoned in the Town Gaol, two mills, common land and the pews from the parish church sold to raise money to cover the debt. It took the town 10 years to recover.
