Description

Mid 18th century 3-storey hotel, originally 3 bays, 2
full-height bays added to W probably early 19th century;
2-storey single bay to E with blocked segmental-arched pend.
Whitewashed render with contrasting painted margins. Columned
porch added to original central doorway in mid 19th century.
Sash windows with 4-pane glazing pattern. Cill bands to upper
floors; cornice; skews; end stacks; slate roofs.
Huge modern rear wing.

Statement of Interest

Crest on front wall set between original building and

addition.

In 1838 Prince Louis Napoleon, afterwards French Emperor,

rested here on his way to the Eglinton tournament. Former

change-house for Edinburgh-London travellers.
