Description

Contract plans prepared by Thomas Brown of Annan, mason;
contractor Hugh Ker of Annan, mason. Dated 1820. Plain
classical 2-storey academy; full-height 2-bay wings added
later in 19th century matching original building and
retaining symmetry; deepened in plan and with rear wing faced
in brick. Droved red ashlar with polished dressings. Slate
roofs.
ORIGINAL BUILDING: 5 bays, shallow advanced end bays, central
openings flanked at each level by pilasters, door in
segmental-arched panel. Base course, frieze and cornice (to
each floor) and blocking course break forward at centre and
ends; raised panels over centre and ends. Multi-paned sash
windows. Axial stacks. Recessed WINGS identically detailed.
Set behind low ashlar wall with corniced square gatepiers,
cast-iron railings.

Statement of Interest

Plan advised on by Academy Committee; the design of the

Liverpool Caledonian School was examined, and the final

scheme was prepared with advice from several individuals,

particularly General Dirom of Mount Annan.
