BRIDGE: later 18th century. Single span, round-headed arch estate road bridge spanning river Ayr in deep ravine. Stugged red ashlar sandstone. Moulded arch flanked by buttresses terminating in tall obelisks adjoining balustraded parapet. Approach walls and 2 capped round-section ashlar piers at N opening out into semi-circular area delineated by capped ashlar piers linked by chains. Approach walls and 2 similar round-section piers at S, wall continues to W side with
2 further gatepiers and long ramp leading to estate workers' houses. ESTATE WORKERS' HOUSES: long 2-storey rectangular block of houses; red ruble sandstone, piended slate roof, boarded doors, mostly 12-pane sash and case and top-hopper windows, ridge stack with thackstane.
VIEWING PLATFORM: crenellated viewing platform to W built over cave with ogival-headed windows.
The weathervane on Barskimming stables (listed in Mauchline Parish) is dated 1774; this bridge is probably of a similar date. There are various caves and grotto features in the ravine which contribute to the dramatically picturesque setting of the bridge. See NOTES to Old Barskimming.
