Description

Dated 1883. Single storey, T-plan village hall. Cream

sandstone, squared and bull-faced to principal elevation, rubble sides and rear; ashlar margins, eaves course and gablet coping to skews. Main E-W block set by crossroads; symmetrical 5-bay S elevation; hoodmoulded tripartite window in gabled bay at centre, with rectangular panel declaring "Temperance Hall in Memory of Arthur Trevelyan 1883"; recessed panels in flanking bays each with tripartite window; advanced, gabled entrances in outer bays, each with roll moulded surround, deep set 2-leaf doors with fanlight and with square panel in gablehead; cross finial to centre bay and simpler finials toouter bays. Return elevations gabled; 2 single windows and oculus on W elevation;later lean-to addition to E elevation below hoodmoulded bipartite window. N-S wing smaller and lower, adjoined to N elevation. Large square-pane glazing patterns in top-hopper windows to S and E, in sash and case to W. Grey-green slates; louvred and finialled, triangular

ventilators; decorative polygonal louvred timber ventilators; decorative polygonal louvred timber ventilator crowing ridge at centre, with pyramidal roof and decorative, gilded weathervane. Coped stack to N of N-S wing. Railings: simple wrought- and cast-iron railings on terraced forecourt to S.

Statement of Interest

Arthur Trevelyan of Tyneholm had commissioned the nearby Tyneholm Cottages and Trevelyan Cottage and Post Office. The temperance hall is sited prominently and noteworthy for its historical importance.
