Tall obelisk raised on arched and vaulted, battered and
corniced square base, architraved and keystoned round-arched
opening to each face and inscription panels on frieze; block
pediment to east and to west face, latter with bronze
medallion bust in wreath. All red ashlar.
Rev Henry Duncan founded the first savings bank; he was
parish minister in Ruthwell until the Disruption of 1843,
when he established a Free Church and School near this spot
(see W Duncan, THE STORY OF RUTHWELL AND MOUNT KEDAR).
