Architect probably Charles Howitt of Drumlanrig estate. Mid
19th century. Estate sawmill, still in use as such, with
detached small office to south. Stugged and squared pink
rubble with ashlar dressings; some timber walling at north
and at east ends of sawmill, including gabled wheelhouse.
Mostly single storey. Sawmill: comprises 3 principal units asymmetrically arranged; taller inner range (with loft) has
ground floor bipartite to west gable and loft door with
hoist; open store below east gable; parallel adjoining north
wing has advanced gable to west elevation, large timber gates
to north; 2-bay south wing transversely set (thus forming
T-plan) with open lean-to on stone piers in eastern
re-entrant angle, door and cartway on south gable. Interior:
much original gearing survives, especially at upper levels.
Office: rectangular-plan, door and window to west gable, with
bronze bell above gable head on wrought-iron frame; single
north-facing window.
Small-paned glazing throughout, and shaped skews with moulded
skewputts; all roofed with graded slates.
Ranges to north, near school, not included in listing.
