Architect probably William Adam, circa 1740. 2-storey L-plan
block, probably built as service quarters for Tinwald house.
Lightly droved red ashlar with polished dressings. All
openings margined; square 1st floor windows linked to eaves
band. 2 doors to 5-bay south west elevation, keystoned
basket-arched cart opening off-centre on long south east
elevation now blocked, with windows. Similar blocked opening
to courtyard, curved drum with parapet in re-entrant angle.
Most windows have small panes. Eaves course and cornice;
symmetrically placed margined apex stacks; piended slate roof,
swept over eaves.
The published designs of William Adam's Tinwald is VITRUVIUS
SCOTICUS shows the house virtually as built, but with wings
unlike those which now form the Cottages and the principal
range of Tinwald Farm; nevertheless, it is probable that
these existing ranges were also designed by Adam: the design
was modified either for publication or for actual
construction.
