Description

Late 17th century. Free-standing sundial. Sandstone. Replacement square shaft. Square dial-stone, with moulded re-entrant angles, on reeded cushion capital. Carved dial, badly weathered; initial "A", "H", "M" and "G" on corners of dial-stone. Iron gnomon, badly weathered.

Statement of Interest

This sundial was apparently made by Andrew Heron, for whom Bargaly

House (see separate listing) was built. The dial bears Andrew Heron's initials and those of his first wife, Mary Graham. The dial could be commemorating either the marriage of Heronand Mary Graham in circa 1678 or the Heron family's move to Bargaly in 1691. The sundial used to be located in the Walled Garden; it is now situated nearby Bargaly House, to the SW. There is another sundial dated 1828 (see separate listing) at Bargaly.

B Group with Bargaly House; Bargaly Lodge, Gatepiers and Railings; Sundial Dated 1828; Tomb of Andrew Heron; Walled Garden (see separate listings).
