Description

1858 (dated). Asymmetrcial gabled former school and adjoining schoolhouse. 2-storey, 3-bay house with school adjoined to S, forming L-plan to rear. Painted rubble. Painted raised margins. Projecting eaves. Timber finials to gableheads.

W ELEVATION: 4-bay; 3-bay house to left, gabled elevation of school to right. Gabled bay advanced to left, with window at ground and 1st floors. Gabled painted brick bay slightly further advanced to left of centre; fanlit door at ground floor, window at 1st floor, and window at ground floor to S return. Window at ground floor and gabled-dormerheaded window at 1st floor in bay to right of centre.

Broad gabled elevation of school advanced to right; window to left; half-piended porch to right, with steps to door to S return and window to W; 2 blind slits in gablehead; red sandstone panel in apex, with "AD1858" inscribed in moulded oval. Rubble wall adjoined to left of porch.

S ELEVATION: 5-bay (1-1-3). Gabled painted brick porch in bay to right of centre, with steps to door to left to W return, bipartite window to S, and window to right to E. Windows in remaining bays. Tall shouldered wallhead stacks, with slightly set-off flues, between bays to centre, left of centre and outer left.

E ELEVATION: gabled elevation of school to left; window to right, and 2 cellar doors to left and right at basement; window to left, and small window to right to N return. Cat-slide extension in bays to left and centre of house; door to left and 2 windows to E; window, reduced from door, to N return. Window at ground and 1st floors in bay to right.

N ELEVATION: gable slightly advanced to left, beyond N return of advanced bay to W to right; blank.

Largely 4-pane glazing in sash and case windows; some 8-pane glazing, some modern galzing. Granite stacks to house, gablehead to N, ridge between house and school to S; red sandstone ashlar stacks to school, gablehead to E, 2 wallhead stacks to S rendered. Small slates. Octagonal cans.

BOUNDARY WALL: low rubble wall to W. Two pyramidal-capped square piers to schoolhouse.

Statement of Interest

Previously listed as "School (Auchenmalg)". The school closed in

1961. The building is currently used as a hotel (1991). Listed for historical value to Old Luce Parish.
