Description

Fragmentary castle standing on an irregular rocky cliff by the River Clyde. The ruinous walls to the south and west of the castle enclosure may be late 14^th century (Buildings of Scotland). A dwelling house has been erected at the northwest corner of the enclosure, partly 16th century, mostly late 19^th century. The northwest turret of the house has chequered corbelling. The round tower in opposite corner of the enclosure (NS 43764 73464) is probably 16^th or 17th century and appears to have been a pigeon house.

Dunglass passed into the hands of the Colquhoun family towards the end of the 16^th century, building the dwelling house within the fortified walled enclosure. The house was remodelled by 1832 with a square two-storey bay added in the west wall, with further enlargement 1852-61 and alteration by Talwin Morris in 1893.
