Description

Opened 1790 by Forth and Clyde Canal Company, modified circa 1820.

BASIN: irregularly shaped basin with masonry walls with heavy copes. At W side lock (circa 1820) down to Bowling Harbour, recently regated, and in SW corner chamber of original lock into River Clyde, now blocked off at sea end.

Statement of Interest

Bowling, original west end of Forth and Clyde, became an important trans-shipment point from canal to larger sea-going vessels. Group comprises swing bridge with associated viaduct; upper basin, lock keepers' houses; bascule bridge and customs house.
