Built as parish manse soon after neighbouring Kilbride parish was suppressed circa 1732, when the Rev Peter Rae was appointed minister. Some alterations. Built mostly of coursed rubble, ashlar detailing; graded slates to roofs. Also outbuildings.
2 storeys 3 bays; square centre porch added late 18th/early 19th century, 1st floor window opening above looks original, and contains sash and case window with 12-pane glazing (of a type similar to that of porch). Windows in outer bays made into bipartites, possibly circa 1840-60, to judge by horizontal glazing pattern surviving top left.
Pair plain, 5-sided dormers. Skews; end stacks. Wings added; low wings on 2 levels recessed on right hand (north) gable, full-height rear wing also at north; semi-circular centre staircase projection at rear. Long and low range of OUTBUILDINGS, also 18th century, part roofless. Pair ashlar GATEPIERS at entrance to driveway, panelled, and corniced; plain iron gates.
Rev Perter Rae (1671-1748) is best known as an early provincial printer, as author of a contemporary histoy of the 1715 Rising, and as author of the 'Rae ms' (copy in Ewart Library, Dumfries). For Rae, see references in PSAS 115, 1985, p. 438 note 2.
