Description

Probably late 17th century with later 19th century
addition. Long, former laird's house with vaulted
basement and 1st floor, sited on falling ground with
later farm buildings adjoined and single storey and
basement 19th century wing at right angles.
17TH CENTURY FARMHOUSE: harled with red sandstone
ashlar margins. N elevation largely blank at ground with
1 small opening at centre and 1 later window to outer
right; 5 irregularly spaced, 18th century windows at 1st
floor, under eaves; 20th century dormer added to left. S
elevation with basement recess by rising ground and
adjoined to right by 19th century addition; 2 doors to
vaulted basement.
E gable altered to include machinery doors; W gable
abutted by steading.
Plate glass glazing in sash and case windows. Crowsteps
and beak skewputts to steeply pitched gables. Harled
end and ridge stacks with thackstanes. Brown pantiles.
INTERIOR: heavily pointed stone barrel-vaulted with
deep, narrow window embrasure to N and opening in
dividing wall to W.
19TH CENTURY ADDITION: sited on falling ground,
resulting in single storey and basement wing, 3 bays
deep. Stugged squared and snecked sandstone with
chamfered arrises; harl-pointing to E elevation. Door
flanked by windows to W; door to basement at E. 12-pane
glazing pattern to sash and case windows. Ashlar coped
skews and ridge stack. Brown pantiles.

Statement of Interest

Chalkieside is one of several surviving early laird's houses in East Lothian (probably of 17th century date), others may be found at Johnscleuch, Mayshiel, and Ugston.
