Description

John Henderson. Datestone 1786, though walls may be earlier. Large walled garden, severe Roman neo-classical, square plan. 4 circular corner pavilions originally domed, with niches, cornice and stepped copings, tetrastyle porticos without pediment set diagonally in angles, Roman Doric with coupled end columns (6 in all) flanking doorways. Segmentally arched gateway with keystone and impost blocks to centre of E wall, architraved doorway with frieze and cornice to centre of S wall. Squared and coursed conglomerate rubble, ashlar in pavilions, columns in single blocks of Craigleith sandstone. Projecting ashlar cope to wall continues as band course in pavilions.

Statement of Interest

1854 and 1908 OS Maps describe SE pavilion as a dovecot. 1908 edition describes SW pavilion as a pheasantry. Both editions show routes within garden radiating round a circular central feature. McWilliam describes this garden as "...the chief monument of 18th century neo-classicism in Lothian". The origins and uses of the 4 pavilions would bear further study.
