Description

Square tower, 1875, originally added to earlier 19th century L-plan school, this replaced with modern 2-storey housing.

TOWER: Gothic details. Stugged pinkish ashlar with polished dressings. E-facing door in tall stage, paired lancets above to elevations with continuous string stepped as hood-mould and clock, angles chamfered at upper level, main wall reduced to angle buttresses supporting pyramidal-roof over narrow open belfry stage; weathervane finial. Corbelled substantial square finial over E gable of S range presumably original belfry; E-facing door alongside; courtyard closed at SW by low range with shouldered wide opening (partially blocked with brick). Enclosed by rubble-built ashlar-coped walls, cast-iron railings at E and at S, and ashlar chamfered square gatepiers.

Statement of Interest

The tower of the school is now clasped by modern fabric (sheltered housing) which took the place of the school. It stands nonetheless as a local landmark.
