James Playfair, architect. Designed 1786/7. 2 houses, built
originally as flanking wings of Langholm Lodge, latter rebuilt
after circa 1788 fire and demolished 1953: only flanking wings
survive. Both of these have symmetrical 7-bay S elevation, with
3 inner bays slightly advanced, stugged grey coursers (other
elevations mostly harled), polished margins, small (mostly 12)-
pane sashes, eaves course and piended slate roofs.
E wing: arranged as 2-storey 3-bay house with single storey
flanking wings; central door glazed, 6-pane 1st floor glazing
pattern, end stacks on ramped plinths. L-plan rear range (with
E-facing 2-bay coach house openings) forms open courtyard.
W wing: S elevation: all 2 storeys, all 12-pane sashes; rear wing
with 3 doors in re-entrant angle, piended single storey outshot
W wall.
Symmetrically placed stacks.
Built for the Duke of Buccleuch. Plans in SRO of Langholm Lodge
(central block) on paper with 1828 "watermark presumably refers
to some alterations about then (RHP 9686)."
