Description

Large farm steading with various building dates, earlier and

later 19th century. The steading is asymmetrically laid out

with a possibly 18th century windmill tower fronting

single-storey byre courtyard. To S of this large T-plan

threshing barn and detached barn and cartshed to E.

Windmill: 4-stage rubble built drum tower, 8.5m high, 5.9m

diameter, now housing milk storage tank to ground. projecting rat-courses between stages over 2nd stage 2 projecting

courses support nest boxes in brick. Door to NE with granite

lintel, blocked door to NW. Window openings to all stages,

most have rubble jambs and simple projecting hood over,

blocked openings to ground at 1st. Rainwater gargoyle spouts

at roof level.

At the SE there is a projecting rectangular bay rising to a

small "cap-house" above parapet level.

This adjoins a single storey byre range of later buildings.

THRESHING BARN: to the SW of the windmill is a tall L-plan

threshing barn which adjoins the byre range to N.

It is more decoratively detailed and probably of mid-19th

century date. Rubble walling with granite quoins, projecting

gabled bay to E with catslide roof to single storey

butt-jointed addition.

E elevation with tall depressed-arch cart entrance with

granite voussoirs and jambs, rubble relieving arch over, 2

small sash and case windows to left with 12-pane glazing

pattern. To projecting bay exceptionally tall and wide

pointed-arch doorway; rubble voussoirs, granite jambs below

springing point. Upper arch now blocked with corrugated sheet

metal, lower part now with sliding door.

W gable with 2 blind tripartite windows with granite

mullions, granite crowsteps and cross finial.

CARTSHED: Early 19th century piend-roofed rectangular

building. Single storey with 3 depressed-arch cart bays that

to right blocked and now doorway. Slate roofs, slates nailed

to battens, sandstone ridges.

Statement of Interest

The windmill tower is unusual in its double function as a dovecot. It is not marked as a windmill on 1st edn OS maps.

Hume gives it an 18th century date and states it was

reputedly a cider press. 1st ed. OS maps show a large orchard

nearby.
