Large farm steading with various building dates, earlier and
later 19th century. The steading is asymmetrically laid out
with a possibly 18th century windmill tower fronting
single-storey byre courtyard. To S of this large T-plan
threshing barn and detached barn and cartshed to E.
Windmill: 4-stage rubble built drum tower, 8.5m high, 5.9m
diameter, now housing milk storage tank to ground. projecting rat-courses between stages over 2nd stage 2 projecting
courses support nest boxes in brick. Door to NE with granite
lintel, blocked door to NW. Window openings to all stages,
most have rubble jambs and simple projecting hood over,
blocked openings to ground at 1st. Rainwater gargoyle spouts
at roof level.
At the SE there is a projecting rectangular bay rising to a
small "cap-house" above parapet level.
This adjoins a single storey byre range of later buildings.
THRESHING BARN: to the SW of the windmill is a tall L-plan
threshing barn which adjoins the byre range to N.
It is more decoratively detailed and probably of mid-19th
century date. Rubble walling with granite quoins, projecting
gabled bay to E with catslide roof to single storey
butt-jointed addition.
E elevation with tall depressed-arch cart entrance with
granite voussoirs and jambs, rubble relieving arch over, 2
small sash and case windows to left with 12-pane glazing
pattern. To projecting bay exceptionally tall and wide
pointed-arch doorway; rubble voussoirs, granite jambs below
springing point. Upper arch now blocked with corrugated sheet
metal, lower part now with sliding door.
W gable with 2 blind tripartite windows with granite
mullions, granite crowsteps and cross finial.
CARTSHED: Early 19th century piend-roofed rectangular
building. Single storey with 3 depressed-arch cart bays that
to right blocked and now doorway. Slate roofs, slates nailed
to battens, sandstone ridges.
The windmill tower is unusual in its double function as a dovecot. It is not marked as a windmill on 1st edn OS maps.
Hume gives it an 18th century date and states it was
reputedly a cider press. 1st ed. OS maps show a large orchard
nearby.
