Description

Earlier-mid 18th century, 3-storey and attic, 5-bay

symmetrically fronted mansion, with large early 19th

century rear block of 2 storeys, with 4-bay west facade

together with various single and 2-storey additions forming

rambling rear. All harled with painted tooled margins.

Main block with centre door masked by painted polished ashlar

portico supported by paired Roman Doric columns with corniced entablature. Wide centre entrance with fanlight. Windows

paired in outer bays; symmetrical 2-windowed (some blind)

east and west gables. 3 later 19th century bargeboarded

dormers; symmetrical ridge and end stacks; projecting gabled

rear stair well with ball finial at apex.

Early 19th century block has piended dormers breaking

wallhead, rear paired gabled wallhead stacks and piended

platform roof.

12-pane glazing; slate roofs.

Interior; main house has some decorative plaster cornices;

rear stair-well with simple cast-iron balustrade with palmette

detailing of late 18th-early 19th century date.

Statement of Interest

Estate belonged to Sutherlands of Forse. Mansion now a hotel.

"an elegant new house built by Captain Sutherland" (1774).
