Description

Gate Lodge; later 19th century, L-plan single storey lodge
over raised basement. Rubble, tooled ashlar dressings;
semi-circular porch in re-entrant angle rising as round
tower with conical, bellcast roof with finial; shallow
rectangular bay window at NE gable (facing road); deeply
chamfered jambs to paired windows in SE elevation. 12-pane
glazing; corniced end stacks; slate roof.
Gate piers; 2 pairs square ashlar gate piers with chamfered
angles, moulded cornices and apex ball finials flanking
carriage and pedestrian entrances. Low coped rubble quadrants
with cast-iron spearhead railings, matching pairs pedestrian
and carriage gates; similar end piers.

Statement of Interest

Mural stone shield initialled S for Sinclair of Dunbeath set

above bay window. Appears on 1st ed. OS (1871).
