Earlier 19th century. 3-bay, symmetrical 2-storey and
basement farmhouse with later 19th century additions to S.
Squared and coursed stone to N elevation, remaining
elevations harled; raised eaves course and base course.
N ELEVATION: basement area oversailed by stone porch with
steps, at centre; semi-circular arch to doorway with
decorative fanlight; cornice and blocking course. Tall
windows flanking at ground; 3 1st floor windows.
S ELEVATION: full-height wing projected from left abutted
by still later flat-roofed addition set in re-entrant angle
at slightly lower level. 4-light canted window links, 2
projections at basement and ground floor levels. Garage
addition at right. Further modern additions on W elevation.
Variety of glazing pattern to sash and case windows, with
uniform 12-pane to N elevation and some modern glazing.
Shouldered wallhead stacks to original house and broad
stack to SW projection, all harled with moulded coping;
original cans retained. Broad eaves to shallow piend-roof of
original house. Grey slates.
RETAINING WALLS: curved rubble retaining walls, curved in
at NW and NE at driveways.
Terraced garden to S. Robert Burns records a visit to
Skateraw in his Border Journals, and though this was before
the present house, it serves to indicate the historical
context of the coastal site.
