Description

Circa 1860. Baronially detailed farm steading on a rambling
plan. Red sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. Chamfered
arrises to segmental arches. Grey slates.
S RANGE: single storey range, opening off-centre to left,
comprised of blank stable walls to right with one door and
cartshed to left, closed at outer angles by square plan,
2-stage towers, with corbelled angle parapets above eaves to
outer corners, and rounded angle to SW corner at ground,
corbelled to square above. Advanced gabled block flanking
courtyard entrance to left, with rounded angles corbelled to
square above, and segmental cart arch; 4 segmental arches to
recessed left bays, that in outer tower blocked.
Large later 19th century barn added to N, with machinery
doors to W by former blocked arch. Square tower to NE corner,
mirroring that to SE.
Covered modern cattle court set in courtyard not of special
interest.

Statement of Interest

Listed category B as variant of the improvement steadings

which grew up all over East Lothian in mid 19th century, and

for relation to contemporary cottages to south, listed

separately. Listing excludes modern covered cattle courts.
