1751-4 (see Notes). Tunnel cut through rock with 4 excavated cellars inside, possibly enlarged from a cave. Segmental-arched sandstone rubble entrance to North with splayed wing walls. Concrete repairs and strengthening inside and at S approach.
The date for the tunnel is taken from Buildings of Scotland. The tunnel is not shown on early 19th century maps, or the survey drawing for Dunglass Harbour, but the 18th century date seems reasonable. The present harbour and access road were built in 1831, and prior to this the tunnel would have provided the only easy access to the shore. It is 183' long and wide enough to take a cart through. The cellars comprise a passage 114' in length, up to 10'6' wide with a series of 4 cellars leading off it. Angus Graham gives a very full description in Vol XCVII of PSAS. The tunnel is still in use (2006).
