Cottage to E, circa 1835; Cottage to W, 2nd half of 19th century (see Notes). 2 single-storey gabled cottages set at different levels on sloping site and linked by piend-roofed block. Sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and coped skews. Cottage to E has arched opening at base of E gable. Timber-boarded doors; timber sash and case windows; slate roofs.
2 traditional cottages occupying a prominent position at the foot of Cove Harbour pier. The harbour and access road were completed in 1831 (see separate listing), and the earlier cottage appears to have been constructed at some point after this date, probably as the harbour-master's cottage. It does not appear on the 1828 survey drawing for the harbour, and prior to the construction of the road access to this spot would have been very difficult; access to the shore was via the tunnel further up the lane (see separate listing). The similarity of the arched entrance in the E gable of this cottage to ones at salt pan houses in Prestwick has led to the suggestion that the cellar was used for salt panning. It is more likely to have been used as a store. The W cottage is not shown on the 1st edition OS map, but does appear on the 2nd edition (circa 1908). The cottages are currently being restored (2006). The entry in Buildings of Scotland appears to have been based largely on the previous list description and is inaccurate.
