Description

1743, repaired 1794, 1816 and 1851. Long, low church; harled
with ashlar margins. 6 bays, 4 centre rectangular windows;
doorways in outer bays. 2 piended dormers above windows in
bays 2 and 4. Bellcote with stumpy finials at west gable;
earlier/mid 19th century burial enclosure at west gable with
Tudor Gothic detail. Gallery forestairs leading to 1st floor
porch at east gable; also ruined burial enclosure of 1637.
Slate roof. Interior; simple interior panelled 1794 pulpit
with flanking stairs. Burial ground; dry stone walls with
rubble cope; 18th, 19th, & 20th century tombs and memorial
plaques.

Statement of Interest

Building in ecclesiastical use as such. Church only used occasionally for services. Church taken over by Free Church of Scotland at the Disruption of 1843 the new Parish Church have been completed in 1842. Cross slab in burial ground is Scheduled Ancient Monument No 1678. Upgraded Category B to A, 15 January 1997.
