Architect presumably Walter Newall, circa 1830; minor
alterations circa 1853. Single storey and attic, 3-bay
farmhouse at south end of courtyard steading. All
rubble-built with ashlar dressings. Whitewashed.
House: gabled central porch a~d bargeboarded canted dormers
added to south elevation in mid 19th century; sash windows
(mostly 12-pane glazing at ground); straight skews; coped end
stacks.
Steading: (entered from south west corner) asymmetrical
recessed ranges flank house, that to west with 3-bay cartshed
to courtyard; tall north range with barn, some boarded and
glazed openings; roof swept over lean-to in west re-entrant
angle; east and west ranges are plainer. Detached L-plan
range to west with roof partly half-slated.
All roofed with graded slates; steading roofs mostly piended,
with some roof lights and louvered ventilators. Courtyard
partly cobbled.
A variation of Newall's design for Alton (see Loudon,
COTTAGE, FARM AND VILLA, ARCHITECTURE, 1846. pp.456-7).
