Description

Later 18th century. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay L-plan farmhouse. Built into bank which slopes downhill to S. Sandstone rubble; ashlar surrounds to openings, band and eaves courses and vertical margins. Harled at E elevation and rear wing.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: central door; flanking windows; 3 1st floor windows centred above; 3 inserted dormer windows. Modern central porch.

W ELEVATION: small ground floor window; central single 1st and attic floor windows.

N ELEVATION: single 1st floor window to right; glazed door to left; window to right and window above. Advanced 2-storey wing to left; Plain rear gable to left; 2 ground floor windows in right return; 2 modern windows above. Door in outshot to far left.

E ELEVATION: inserted ground floor door with window to right; off-centre 1st floor window; 1st floor window to far right. 2 attic floor windows to modern wing. Modern outshot to far right; central window to E elevation and in left return.

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Pitched, slate roof; raised skews. Flat roof to rear wing; piend slate roof to outshot. Lean-to slate roof to NE outshot. Corniced gable apex stacks; polygonal clay cans. Wallhead stack to rear wing and to outshot.

INTERIOR: not seen, 2000.

GARDEN WALLS

Rectangular garden wall; sandstone rubble; rough coping stones. Flanking walls extend from gable walls, enclosing smaller rear gardens. Open gateway in right wall to front; doorway in left wall; flat coping stones. Wall attached to rear gable wall; random sandstone; 4 interspersed upright coping stones.

Statement of Interest

B-Group with Craigluscar Doocot. The name, Craigluscar is depicted on Ainslie's 1775 map. The lower level of rear wing may be contemporary, a wing is shown on the 1st Edition OS Map; upper storey added circa later 20th century. Adjacent doocot is listed separately. Farm buildings to rear are not part of the Statutory List.
