According to the owner, 8 Red Row was once the Customs House where sailors received their pay and was possibly a former inn, perhaps the Ship Inn, however, the only indication of this has been an abundance of corks found under the floor boards. It is also believed to be the inn that features in R L Stevenson's novel Kidnapped. It was here that David Balfour and Alan Breck received help from the owner's daughter as she rowed them across the Forth to South Queensferry. Fish curing took place along Red Row.
