Description

18th century. 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan house with outshot to rear. Harled, painted stone surrounds to openings, projecting long and short quoins from eaves stopping at shoulder height with chamfered section below to N corner. Eaves course with moulded cavetto eaves cornice. Curb stone to N.

NW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical elevation. Gibbs surround doorpiece to centre; flanking imposts linked by architrave, keystone with voussoirs above entrance incorporating pulvinated frieze surmounted by pediment. Windows to 1st and 3rd bays. 1st floor windows above openings below, close to eaves.

SW ELEVATION: window to left, 1st floor window above, 34 High Street attached.

SE (REAR) ELEVATION: partially seen, 2002. Rear outshots to ground floor, various fenestration to 1st floor.

NE ELEVATION: window to far right, 1st floor window above.

2-leaf timber panelled door, predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows, rooflight to rear. Pitched roof, graded grey slates. Coped ashlar skews. Squat, coped, gable apex stack to NE, elongated, corniced gable apex stack to SW, clay cans.

Statement of Interest

NOTES: Aberdour and surrounding land is divided between the old feudal estates of the Earls of Morton (Easter Aberdour) and the Earls of Moray (Wester Aberdour). Main Street is the main thoroughfare to Easter Aberdour. 36 Main Street is notable within the context of Main Street for its Gibbsian doorpiece, long and short quoins and cavetto eaves cornice which set it apart from the more vernacular tone of the rest of the street.
