Farmhouse and steading comprising 18th and 19th century
buildings and with particularly good barn. All whitewashed
rubble and ashlar dressings, house with contrasting painted
margins. Roofs mainly covered with graded slates.
HOUSE: late 18th/early 19th century; 2 storeys 3 bays,
central gabled (brick and ashlar) porch; brick and stacks.
Rear wings not original.
BARN: tall freestanding, at W end of steading; 18th century,
increased in length in first half 19th century. Square-headed
barn door in outshot to courtyard with dovecot above (row of
square flight holes) and main roof swept over: forestair in
re-entrant angle; cornice over original building.
REMAINDER OF STEADING: extensive series of ranges, mainly
single storey, arranged and stepped to slope; lesser court at
E, E range an implement shed, post and lintel construction.
Well-kept rubble walls to driveway are also whitewashed.
Said to have been visited by John Ruskin.
