Description

Dated 1833. Large U-plan 2-storey steading with single and
lower 2-storey buildings completing courtyard, formerly
serving Earlston House (now demolished). Rendered walling
with polished red sandstone margins and rusticated quoins and
cart archways.
2-storey, 7-bay symmetrical frontage with central gable.
Depressed arch cart sheds to end bays, central gabled bay has
pend giving access to stabling at either side, and to
courtyard. Dovecote set in gable with 3 levels of flight
holes set in sandstone masonry, panel with date 1833 over.
All windows single light, those to stables with iron bars.
Stalls with all fixtures still in situ. Coped axial stacks,
good graded piended slate roof. Lean-to structures (mainly
pigsties) to rear of 2-storey range. Single and 2-storey
buildings complete courtyard, rubble built most with slate
roofs, including barn, byres and domestic offices eg laundry,
most interiors have been gutted.

Statement of Interest

Stables built to serve Earlston House, built 1816 for Sir

John Gordon; house demolished. Gordon did much to improve

agriculture in the parish.
