Drumoak
The settlement evolved from a holy well and church of St Maik at the river ford at Dalmaik, which led south across to the pass leading across the hills to Stonehaven known as Elsick Mounth. The most ancient name of this parish is mentioned in a bull (from bulla, the Latin for the lead seal attached to important charters issued by the Pope) of 1157 from Pope Adrian IV., "Ecclesiam de Dulmayok," pronounced Dal-maik. The more modern name, Drumoak, appears in a charter, dated 1407, granted by Bishop Gilbert.
There is a plaque which commemorates the foundation of Dalmaik in 1062 although this date has been heavily disputed by local historians. What is certain is that the existing structure had been used as a place of worship from the 1500’s right up until November 1836.
