Description

Probably 1820-30. Constructed of re-used material which appears to include part of the former church steeple. Small square cote of roughly pointed and squared red sandstone with tooled sandstone dressings. Centre entrance with paired flight holes above lintel fronted by small alighting ledge. Stumpy octagonal pyramidal tooled ashlar roof (probably re-using material from former steeple) with small paired or single flight holes in S and W facing facets. Stumpy angle wallhead finials with triangular caps.

INTERIOR: approximately 40 stone nesting boxes survive.

Statement of Interest

Church superseded in 1818 after which it probably formed a handy quarry. The Rev. George Gardiner, who moved into the manse in 1823, was most dissatisfied with the new accommodation provided and may have built the dovecot as part of the improvements to the manse offices he considered necessary. A new bellcote as added to the church in 1771; remains of a spire may have been available thereafter. The small number of nesting boxes indicate an early 19th century date.

Category changed from A to B, 23 May 1990.
