Description

Mid 19th century. 2-storey, wide single bay red painted rectangular weatherboarded timber cottage in Alpine style. Entrance at rear; NE gable projects, supported by square wooden posts carried up through jettied gable frontage incorporated in framework. Flat balustered balcony supported on brackets continuous at 1st floor long elevations and SW gable. Single 2-light multi-pane glazed windows with wooden

shutters in each elevation in either ground or 1st floor; red tiled roof and ridge with deep eaves supported by shaped wooden brackets; tooled ashlar coped ridge stack. Carved detailing, mainly geometric forms and billet-moulding, decorates return gables.

Statement of Interest

Formerly part of Gordon Castle estate, flanking one of the (disused) entrance drives. Appears on 1st ed. OS, 1870. Unusual building, the only other example of 'Swiss cottage' in Moray is associated with Ballindalloch Castle. Upgraded, Category B to A, June 1996.
