Description

Later 19th century. Single storey pair of L-plan cottage
rows forming U-plan group; originally 6, 3-bay cottages,
currently merged to 4. Purple rubble with droved grey
ashlar dressings.
S ELEVATION: narrow passage dividing 6 bays. To each
longer wing with doorways in penultimate bays to centre
and in returns by re-entrant angles. Consoled penticed
slab porches; strip fanlights. Bank gables to advanced
outer wings.
N ELEVATION: irregular openings, some enlarged. Gabled
outer bays. Doorway inserted in E range.
E AND W ELEVATIONS: altered, irregular openings. Variety
of 4-pane and 12-pane glazing patterns to sash and case
windows. Coped stacks, raised above in brick; ashlar
coped skews. Grey slates.

Statement of Interest

Formerly known as Burnside Cottages, with burn at foot to S

with early narrow rubble bridge to SE. Consoled porch form

is a common feature to North Berwick area. The cottages

apparently served the slate quarry to N now closed.
