Description

Circa 1810. 2-storey, 3-bay house. Late 19th century timber panelled door with letterbox fanlight; window to inner R, blocked window opening to inner L. Later painted pebbledash with painted margins to openings; raised cills; eaves course and cornice; shallow central pediment with corniced stack at apex.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: 2 storeys and basement. Later brick 3-storey addition to centre. Sandstone rubble with remains of lime harl.

INTERIOR: altered. Cast-iron balustrade and mahogany handrail.

UPVC glazing replacing traditional timber sash and case glazing, probably 12-pane; aluminium glazing to ground floor (installed prior to listing). Grey slates; coped ashlar end stack with later cans; circular clay can to apex stack.

Statement of Interest

A typical early 19th century building given added significance by the small pediment and apex stack, characteristic of this part of the country. Many buildings have unfortunately lost the stacks from the pediments. Where surviving, these add variety and interest to the streetscape. There are no later dormers to this building, enhancing the prominence of the pediment and stack.
