Early 19th century. 2-storey, 3 bay flatted dwelling with later piended dormers. Narrow central door. Later (probably cement) harl; raised and painted margins, eaves course and cornice.
NW (REAR) ELEVATION: 2 storeys and basement; central curved stair tower with stone steps and cast-iron railings; flanking windows.
Non-traditional windows throughout including uPVC to upper floors. Inappropriate concrete tiles to roof replacing traditional grey slates; straight stone skew to L; small brick gable stack (probably later).
INTERIOR: part seen 2003. Communal close with timber 2-leaf doors with fielded panels (access to garden at rear); stone turnpike stair to 1st floor flat; some reeded architraves with corner roundels.
A standard, plain symmetrical villa that relies on its simplicity of form but has unfortunately lost much of its traditional character: the addition of dormers and removal of slates has considerably affected the character; the later glazing and thick cement harl also mean that there is little of merit left in this building. For these reasons, the building has been downgraded from Category B to C(S). It remains listed for its prominence in the streetscape and, because sufficient character survives, it would benefit from future restoration of its traditional features.
