Country house, built in stages until finally given appearance
of a Scots late 17th/early 18th century house - steep
bell-cast roofs, centre shallow-plan range with near
symmetrical and full height flanking pavilions, 2 storeys
plus basement, south (garden) elevation with plain regular
single window bays, basement raised fully. All rubble-built,
ashlar dressings, small-paned sash windows; slate roofs.
Earliest work evident on south front; 5 bays nearest west
belong to a house of the first part of the 18th century,
originally with basement door central; plain window margins,
simple moulded cornice; 2 further identical bays added to east
probably in first half of 19th century, eastmost bay of
original house reconstructed then also; L-plan pavilions and
entrance front fenestration all look later and may all be by
Peddie & Kinnear; the entrance front is near symmetrical,
front wall of body of house asymmetrically shallow advanced
with large porch (symmetery thrown perhaps by 2-bay addition
mentioned above). Further low additions to either side, that
to west in exposed brick. Interior work mostly 19th century;
some handsome chimney pieces, some decorative cornice
plasterwork, timber main stair. Alterations.
Also known as Bertram House.
