Description

Late 18th century, pair of hay/threshing barns. Both
orientated north/south; northern barn possibly the older.
Both of coursed drystone, square rubble; low walls with
marked external batter, wide wall vents filled with rough
vertical half-cut staves, replacing former wattling; centre
windowing doorways; piended roofs.
Northern barn; measures 55' x 19' with 5'6" wallhead height;
corrugated iron roof; modern silage pit falls floor space.
Southern barn; measures 62'6" x 19' with 6'9" wallhead
height; thatched roof over felt; cemented floor.

Statement of Interest

Very unusual pair barns, showing strong Hebridean influence

in their walling Dating difficult, but could well be earlier

than late 18th century in view of earlier Applecross House.

Appear on undated, but probably earlier 19th century, estate

maps in Applecross House, on which the Mains appears as

Borrodale. Barns would originally have heather thatched the

heavy roofs borne by pairs of crucks (couples) standing on

the cills of the wide vents. Similar barns in Kintail and the

Gairloch.
