Description

1914-19, with circa 1935 addition, in Arts and Crafts
tradition. Balfour Paul, architect, Edinburgh. 2-storey,
roughly L-plan house with later wing forming U-plan rear
court approached through pend passing under circa 1935
drawing room extension. Random mixed granite, tooled grey
granite ashlar dressings.
Off-centre entrance in N elevation; pale grey granite moulded
doorpiece. Asymmetrical S garden front with wide partially
glazed verandah under catslide roof with 3-window box
dormer with floral embossed lead linking panels. Wide 3-light
window left (lighting sitting room former drawing room);
gabled W elevation with 2 ground floor canted bay windows.
At NW tall, 4-bay 1st floor drawing room wing with 4 long
windows breaking wallhead under piended gables and pend
below.
Gabled E elevation and rear service wing. 1st floor windows
break wallhead under piended gablets; multi-pane glazing
throughout.
Service court screened by high coped wall with entrance
flanked by round rubble gate piers with circular caps.
Lean-to outbuilding in form of lectern dovecote with angle
ball finial on rear wallhead.
End and ridge coped stacks; wallhead stack to drawing room
wing with shaped scroll base; kneelers to gables; local
slate roofs.
Interior: entrance lobby with beams leads to inner stairhall
with large chimneypieces; sitting room with simple carved
chimneypiece with tiled surround. Later 1st floor drawing
room opens from staircase, large long barrel vaulted room
with ribbed plaster ceiling, the ribbing decorated with shell
and seaweed design; moulded ceiling cornice. Mural
semi-circular niche with shell head; 17th century style
lugged marble chimneypiece with carved oak leaf detailing
to cornice and mantel with egg and dart decoration.

Statement of Interest

Original house built by Sir Alfred Booth of Liverpool (Cunard

Line). Balfour Paul with Rowand Anderson, Paul and Partners,

Edinburgh. This firm included Basil Spence in 1930's, who

worked on the drawing room addition of Broomhill House.
